Randy Wittman on his way out

Wittman to be fired this week?
The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
12/8/08
In what has already been a season of change through the first six weeks, another coach looks to be on his way out. The St. Paul Pioneer Press is reporting this morning that Randy Wittman will be asked to step down, and owner Glen Taylor wants kevin McHale to take over the coaching duties in the interim. The Wolves, who have looked horrible at times, seem to be going backwards, and the Minnesota’s management wants no part of that. Oklahoma City and Washington have already fired coaches this season, and neither has named a permanent replacement.
The Knicks are going to be in the market for a point guard this week, if, as expected, Stephon Marbury is released, and Cuttino Mobley retires. The Knicks, who have a trade exception worth roughly $1 million dollars, can trade that exception to a team for a player who is making that amount. Clearly they won’t make too many waves with the name they can bring back to the Garden, but anyone will do right now for the Knicks.
The Sacramento Kings are expected to retire the jerseys of two of their biggest fan favorites this spring, in forward Chris Webber and center Vlade Divac. Webber and Divac were apart of some of the best Kings teams in franchise history, and had classic battles with the Kobe and Shaq-led Lakers earlier this decade. No date has been set for Webber’s jersey retirement, but Divac is expected to see his number go up on March 31st, 2009.

Whose really number 1

The Number 1 of all Number 1s….
Ranking the Number 1 picks since 1990…
With another NBA Draft on the books, I like to take time to sit back and reminisce on
the drafts of the previous few years, and see who wound up living to their potential, and who a bust. LayupDrill.com is proud to reveal our Top 10 Number 1 picks since 1990.
10. Derrick Rose - Chicago Bulls - 2008
A shock to some by putting a player who has not played a game yet in our top 10 number 1s. Rose has the potential, and we stress potential, to be that good. Chicago has a point guard for the next decade.
9. Larry Johnson - Charlotte Hornets - 1991
“Grandmama” dominated the college hardwood with UNLV before making his splash into the NBA with the young expansion Hornets. His 9 season career was respectable, averaging 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 48% from the floor. Johnson showed flashes of greatness during the playoffs for Charlotte in 1994-95 season, as well as when the Knicks made their miracle run to the NBA Finals.
8. Elton Brand - Chicago Bulls - 1999
The most coveted free agent of the 2008 off season is a career 20-10 guy. Brand spent only 2 seasons with the team that drafted him, before being shipped out to the LA Clippers, and becoming the cornerstone to the franchise. Brand’s sole playoff appearance came in 2005-06, where he was arguably the best player on the court in every series he played in, averaging 25.4 points and 10 boards a game. The 2 time all star has the best yet to come in his career.
7. Chris Webber - Orlando Magic - 1993
I still remember watching the 1993 NBA draft, where Chris Webber donned the Orlando Magic hat, and thinking The Magic were going to have the most dominant front court the league had seen in years, teaming Webber and Shaq together. Of course, we would learn a few hours later that Chris would be shipped to Golden State for Penny Hardaway. It was in Oakland that Webber made his initial impact on the NBA in a major way, winning Rookie of the year, and leading the Warriors to the playoffs in his first season. Webber would leave Golden State for stops in Washington, Sacramento, Philiadelphia, and ending his career in Detroit. The 5 time all star never made it to the NBA Finals, coming close with the Kings, to be denied by the Shaq and Kobe led Lakers. C Webb came along way from the infamous no timeout - timeout against North Carolina in the NCAA Title Game.

Hall Of Fame Debate - Chris Webber

Chris Webber - Hall of Famer?
For many fans, the first images of Chris Webber are of a young, raw manchild wearing the maize and blue of the Michigan Wolverines, dominating the college scene with the Fab Five. Webber’s most memorable moment in college was the infamous no timeout, timeout play against North Carolina in the Final Four.
We of course would later see Webber get drafted after only two years in the college game to the Orlando Magic, then swapped for Penny Hardaway on a draft night deal to Golden State. Webber’s career looked like a sure fire hall of famer to begin. He led the Warriors to the playoffs in his 1 season with them, averaging 17 points and 9.5 rebounds.
Chris would get sent to the Washington Bullets and had a productive career in Washington, though never living up to the potential many had put on his career early on. 5 NBA All Star appearances and a 5 Time All NBA performer, Webber made his biggest impact on the pro game in Sacramento, where for the early part of this decade, he teamed up with Mike Bibby and Peja Stojakovic, and came within an eyelash of the NBA Finals, only to lose to the hated Lakers.
Life after Sacramento wasn’t good for Chris. He was traded to Philly on the downswing of his career, where the Webber and Iverson connection just didn’t deliever the results management was looking for. Webber would later get bought out of the remaining 25 million dollars of his contract there. His later stints with Detroit, and then finishing up his career with Golden State were non-productive, and he was a shell of his former self. Looking back at his career, I cant help but respect the numbers Chris put up. A career 20 and 10 guy(20 points/10 rebounds). Though he never won a title or made it to the championship round, Webber was, at times, one of the 1 or 2 best players at his poistion in the league.
My belief is that when you look at the total body of work, Chris is not a hall of famer. Though numbers are impressive, there seems to be something missing from his career resume that would put him in the elite company of all time great power forwards. He is a cut below the Karl Malsone, Charles Barkley, Tim Duncan and even Kevin Garnetts.
